I wanted a button to switch off, and got an impressive event-plugin creation suite
Sometimes it is amazing to see and feel how simple ideas evolve. Let me tell you a cool story I encountered, while contributing to GatherPress. Backstory I came to find the plugin 2,5 years ago looking for a solid and future-proof, a.k.a. block-based and FSE-ready, path to bring a lot of theater-related custom code into a bigger refactoring. All based on an event-plugin, that is still around, but has never caught up with modern WordPress. I was very happy to find GatherPress in a good shape, handling data in a way I liked, integrating into core UI as it was…

Security issue reported and solved
We learned about malicious code that was found on some of our GitHub repositories. The main GatherPress plugin was not affected in any way. It only affected some supporting plugins, including the GatherPress Alpha migration plugin. Version 0.34.0-alpha.2 has been re-released and is safe to download again. Big thanks to Carsten and Mike, who have been working nonstop to solve the issue, and to Roy for reporting this. What you need to do End users of GatherPress: no action needed. This code cannot run through the plugin or WordPress. If you opened any affected repo or zip in VS Code…

Help us shake out 0.34.0-alpha.2 then beta, and come say hi at WCEU
The next GatherPress release is taking shape, and we need your help getting it across the line. 0.34.0-alpha.2 is up, and this is the cycle where we’d love as many eyeballs on it as possible before we cut a beta. Heads up: this is a big one. Among other things, it includes post-type-supports decoupling, server-rendered venue maps, async geocoding, network-wide settings, a restructured Settings API, RSVP mode + Open RSVP, pattern pickers, and the new jetpack-changelogger workflow with tag-driven release automation. Full rolled-up changelog on the release page. How to install and test Install both plugins at matching versions —…

GatherPress officially debuts at WordCamp US 2024
GatherPress just celebrated its 5-year anniversary on September 18. That was the first commit I made to the project in 2019. It seemed only fitting that our anniversary was during the week of WordCamp US, where our plugin was officially recognized as a WordPress community project. It was exciting walking in as a “Table Lead” at WordCamp US Contributor Day and finding the table I would manage with the GatherPress team that would be in attendance. In addition to that, we had a few folks from our team on Zoom, as well as some first time contributors that were participating…

Test GatherPress in real conditions
In coordination with Angela Jin, the GatherPress team was asked to setup a Test/Demo site in order to test GatherPress in real conditions and gather feedback before to ask the Meta team to integrate GatherPress to the WordPress.org network. This test follows our proposal on the Make Community site on 22 January 2024. It is set up to work in coordination with the Make Community and Meta Teams, with the help of the Hosting and Accessibility Teams, in order to test the potential to integrate GatherPress on the WordPress.org network as an alternative to Meetup.com for our events. If you…
